A sane woman's guide to marriage as well.

relationships A sane womans guide to marriage as well.

This past week I discovered, quite unexpectedly, that if all goes as it normally does I will be meeting my 4th child in November. This was not part of the plan. But we are thrilled. Fortunately I was already reading A Sane Woman's Guide to Raising a Large Family, by Mary Ostyn, mother of 10. While the book is full of sanity saving tips for parents of any number of children, (Hah, sanity saving, see how I did that?) what I wanted to share with you this week is an excerpt from her section on making time for your marriage.

A lot of our success, I think, hinges on the small stuff, the tiny daily actions that make a person feel loved; the way my husband puts that first cup of coffee in the morning right in my sleepy hands without me ever saying a word; making time for romance on a regular basis, even when we're tired; saying "you smell nice," when he does: hearing you look beautiful," even when I feel frumpy; having a secret sign for "I think you're hot!"…

My husband and I don't get it right every day. But we do get some of it right most days. That's the beauty of being intentional about the little things. Let's face it, it your life is so frantically busy that you can't fit in something small like squeezing your hubby's rear as you run past him on the way to baseball practice or putting the paper down to look her in the eyes for two minutes when she talks to you, well, then, your whole life needs reworking.

I've been married 8 1/2 years. We have 3 children ages 7, 5, and 2 that I home school. My husband and I founded a non profit organization this past year. We plan to move our family to Thailand to help take care of children at risk in refugee communities in the north. Once I spent a lot of time complaining about my husband. Now I know I'm very blessed to have him and spend time trying to be a good wife. In my "spare time" I write.

Congratulations! Thanks, too, for sharing the link to that book – even though we're "only" a family of 5, I think I'll take a peek. I could use some sanity saving around here.
