Receiving a Feldenkrais Session
This is part two in a series on alternative therapies for cerebral palsy.
What is it? Created by Moshe Feldenkrais, the Feldenkrais method seeks to improve movement through awareness. It's performed by certified Feldenkrais practitioners.
What should you expect in a session? When working with people with cerebral palsy, practitioners do a one-on-one session. These sessions are specifically geared towards the needs of the student and involve being moved by the practitioner. My son attends Feldenkrais sessions and his are geared toward creating more awareness of his weaker side and more movement in his lower body. Sessions are not at all painful, although some children get very hungry during them.
How much does it cost? Sessions can run from $75 to $200 for a one-hour session, depending on the experience of the practitioner. Many practitioners have a sliding scale if money is an issue. Additionally, some practitioners will give you a discount if you would like to attend multiple sessions in the same week.
Anything else I should know? In some areas of the country, licensed physical therapists are also certified Feldenkrais practitioners. In these cases, insurance should pay for at least some of a session.
