And then there were three. The first time there has ever been an all male top three. Not that it surprises me. This year has been the guy’s year to dominate. They were strong from the very start. Two songs tonight. One chosen by the judge and one chosen by the contestant.
Danny Gokey (Dance Little Sister- Paula’s choice): Very obscure song choice, but it allowed Danny to show some nice personality and a lot of that raspy belting voice he does. Didn’t think it showed enough range, but that ain’t his fault, he didn’t pick the song. Judges like it, except for the dancing apparently. I love his dancing. It is quintessential Danny. Nice start to the show.
Kris Allen (Apologize-Kara and Randy’s choice): I love that song!! I see him doing more Jason Mraz type stuff so this choice was a little weird for me. And I thought it was a little boring. Vocally it was really good and you can’t go wrong with his voice, it is stellar, but I just found myself tuning out a bit. I think I agree with the judges that he should have taken more risks with the song. And then the judges disintegrated into verbal sparring. What is up with them tonight? Somebody didn’t take their happy pills!
Adam Lambert (One- Simon’s choice): Agree with Simon, this is a great song. I know a lot of people are Adam haters, but I really respect this guy’s talent. That being said, I did not like this version of this song. It was too different from the original for me. When the original is so brilliant, why mess with it. Randy agreed with me. Kara, Paula and Simon gushed over him.
Danny Gokey (You Are So Beautiful): This song has the potential to be cheesy, but I thought he made it current and really tender. I really liked the softness of the beginning and the end was really powerful. I got choked up. Really, really fantastic. The judges loved him. Simon even called it a “vocal masterclass.” That better launch him into the finals.
Kris Allen (Heartless): Super, crazy weird song choice. A bit risky for the final performance. But I think the risk pulled off. Very cool version of this song. I like that is was just Kris doing his thing. No funky arrangement or crazy singing. Very definitive Kris. The judges were pretty much blown away. Randy even called it better than the original. Way to come back after a mediocre first song!!
Adam Lambert (Cryin’): Good choice for him. Vocally that was obviously very impressive, but for originality Danny and Kris were far riskier and cooler. Still this guy can deliver a song. The judges really go overboard on their love for him though which I find a bit off putting. I mean the guy is super talented, but so are the other two.
Despite what the judges say, I still think it is anyone’s game to win this thing. The guys brought it tonight and delivered a fantastic show. I am not even going to try and predict who is going home. What do you think? Who deserves to take it all?
