Big Help for Small Kitchens

This is my galley kitchen and it measures 8' x 8' from wall-to-wall. So how do I manage to cook in a space this small? Let me tell you about some of my favorite kitchen helpers.

Folding Step Stool. I have the most wonderful folding step stool that allows me to reach the top shelf of my kitchen cabinets without any problem. At 5'2" tall on a good day, I could not function in the kitchen without my step stool. I has a false front that looks exactly like my kitchen drawers and folds easily for storage in the kick plate when not in use.

Under Shelf Wire Bins. The wire bins in the picture below let me make use of the space above my dishes, glasses and mugs. I also use them in my pantry. They are available for a few dollars each at any Container Store, a nationwide chain that sells organizational and storage tools. You can purchase these bins in white – which I chose – or silver. More colors may be available, I haven't been to the Container Store in awhile. And yes, call me boring, all my dishes are white. I prefer a monochromatic goes-with-everything look.

Over-the-Sink-Colander or Strainer. I love my large single bowl sink, but whenever I need that "extra" bowl for rinsing vegetables or draining pasta, I pull out my expandable colander/strainer. When not in use, I store it with my pots and pans. These colanders are available at Target for $20 to $25.

I'm a wife and working mother of two-teenage boys living in an 1800 sq. ft. colonial house on the North Shore of Chicago. The Jewel Box Home exists because my husband refused to move to a bigger house. When I could not find a single interior designer willing to help me decorate our little place - my budget and house were both too small - I taught myself how to do it and the Jewel Box Home was born. I now know that the most important feature of a home is not its size, but how it makes people feel. Besides, you can't have everything, where would you put it? I look forward to seeing you soon at the Jewel Box Home.

  1. This little article has really made my day! My love and I are anxiously awaiting to see if an offer for our first home has been accepted. I love to bake. I would do it all day if I could find enough people to take the goods. The home has a kitchen of 15 X 7 and your article, with the beautiful photos has just given me a little bit more excitement!… My fingers are so tightly crossed!!

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
