Blogs Without Passion Flounder, Like Ships Without Captains

Flowers - Photo by Erica MuellerFor some time I'd been wondering why Mom Blogs are so huge right now, and why they gain and retain such strong readerships. This morning I read something about blogging, but completely unrelated to moms, which turned a light on for me:

Content that is passion driven holds a reader's attention.

As moms, many of us write about our daily lives, and that includes our children. Family is what is most important to us, and let's be truthful here, family dynamics (even someone else's) are fascinating!

Family is a fun topic, but for those of us who wish to blog about other things, I believe the same truth applies: Technology bloggers, women concerned about our family's health and the environment, foodies, frugal fashionitas, or fashion divas – so long as our mouth is where our hearts are, our passion will be noted in our content.

passionnoun; a strong or extravagant fondness,
enthusiasm, or desire for anything: a passion for music.

Starting a new blog? Feeling burnt out? Ask yourself these questions:

Do I enjoy talking about this topic? Do I know what I'm talking about? Will I still enjoy writing about this topic six months from now? A year? Three years from now? What if I never earn a cent? Will I continue to write regardless of the money?

What's your passion? Do you blog about it? If you do reviews or giveaways, do you limit them to items or topics you're passionate about?

  1. I completely agree! Just this week I was feeling competetive and down on myself when I realized that I have blogged for free for 6 years and loved it. ANY money I make or readership I gain is just the icing on an already delicious cake :-) Thanks so much for your post!

Wow! 6 years is great! And, quite a testament to the passion for your topic!

I love the tagline for your site. :-)

I would agree with you Erica. If you are blogging about something you are passionate about, it will come easy to you and won't feel like work.

I recently took a long look at what I was pursuing in my life and decided to leave an organization I had been a part of for 5 years and follow my true passion.

Now that I am doing something that I truly love, I find myself blogging 2 or 3 times a day with ease.

Wishing you a picture perfect day!

Congrats on leaving the organization to pursue the things you love! So many people learn too late that working a job they dislike isn't worth it. While the things we love don't always bring us as much money, they are often more rewarding!!

    Good post, Erica!
Passion is definitely the key for without it, blogging just becomes another task that you'll eventually grow tired of doing.

This site is a beauty BTW.

      Jimi,

I wish I could take credit for the beautiful site… :-) However, I'm just a contributor to this beautiful community.
