Welcome to the final installment of Cleansing from the Inside Out, a series about my experience participating in Amanda Moxley’s Whole Body and Mind Cleanse program. For more on my cleanse experience, read the entire series.
It’s been about a year since I participated in the cleanse group, and while I’ve slipped back into some of my old behaviors, Amanda’s words and the lessons I learned in her group come back to me regularly.
I’m still working on trusting my body to tell me what it needs. Soon after the cleanse, I added my biggest vice—caffeine—back into my diet. When some odd symptoms started creeping up after my morning coffee, it didn’t take long for me to decide to gradually let caffeine go again. My food choices are generally healthy: I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and whole grains; I include less meat in my diet and have replaced it with more beans and fish. I even allow myself to eat chocolate and the occasional cookie, when I really want it.
Yet sometimes I find myself slipping into old eating patterns. You don’t break 25 years of poor eating habits and heal a dysfunctional relationship with food in a few months – or even a year. I’ve trusted guilt to guide my food choices for so long and sometimes it creeps back in. It’s easier to let it go now, though, as I remind myself that my body is trustworthy and that guilt is a lot less helpful than I think it is.
Thanks to my cleanse experience, I tend to be much more gentle with myself. I don’t beat myself up about my decisions nearly as much as I used to. I try to accept them and move on. I also make more of an effort to take time out to care for my body and my mind through exercise, hot baths, massages and relaxation time.
The Whole Body and Mind Cleanse was an experience that will stay with me for a long time. Reviewing my experience through this series has reminded me of the skills I gained and lessons I learned, and how important those skills and lessons are to my health and well-being. I love my body and I want it to be strong and healthy. Amanda’s cleanse helped me get on the right path, and while I’ve strayed a bit and lost track of what is really important – to my body and my mind – I have all the tools I need to get back on the path to a healthier, happier, more fulfilling life.
The Hollywood Master Cleanse never could have done that for me.
