What's one game that every child should play?
If I could choose two, I'd say Go Fish and checkers. I mentioned Go Fish last week. Let's look at checkerboards today.
I found checkerboards made from wood, acrylic, fabric, yarn, and stained glass. There were small ones and big ones, pricey and inexpensive, exquisitely fancy and very simple. Below are six of my favorites. I hope you enjoy!
Wooden Wonder Knits

Wooden Wonder Knits is run by a husband and wife team. He does woodworking, she knits, and they are learning new crafts all the time. I love that they have grown children and grandchildren, and they spend their days making handmade treasures for the rest of us.
This checkerboard is actually the top of a handmade table. It folds up in the center for storage, and it includes an extra piece in case you lose one.
Wood Mosiacs by Robin Tucker

Wow. I'm left speechless by Robin's Etsy shop.
His pieces are works of art as perfect as any you'll find. Each one is signed and dated and labeled with the materials and methods used. Don't worry, though, because they are as functional as they are beautiful. Some, like this one, are made into boxes to hold the pieces.
Touch of Rita

Rita's shop is full of crocheted treasures, big and small. I can imagine playing checkers on an afghan-sized checkerboard. It would take up the whole living room floor, but it would be fantastic!
JL Glass

I'm a Penn State alum, and this set screams Penn State to me. I love it!
JL Glass is a husband and wife team in Texas, and their shop is filled with all sorts of glass treasures.
Goose Grease

Pirate checkers versus ninja checkers? I think that's hilarious. Plus, the set comes with five extra large checkers for the kings.
On Goose Grease UnDone, you can buy the handmade set totally unpainted so that you can have characters of your choice. Mom's Alma Mater versus Dad's Alma Mater? Older child versus younger child? You can have any checkers you want!
Les Vieux Jours

This fabric checkerboard folds up to make a purse. The checkers are recycled bottle caps, and the whole thing is customizable.
I hope you enjoyed this week's picks. If you see an item or shop that you'd like to see featured, please drop me a line!
