File Folder Games

Stuck inside on a cold or rainy day? Why not make your own board games out of simple file folders! They are fun to make and easy to store – even toddlers can make these with your help!

Supplies:

  • file folders – plain or colored, whatever you have on hand
  • crayons, markers, etc.
  • stickers
  • dice
  • something to use for your game pieces – animals, characters, buttons, coins, etc.

Decide what kind of path you want your game to have – you can do a traditional "road" like Candyland, a racetrack, or even stepping stones through a garden. Be creative! Color your path and decorate your entire board. We love using stickers! Decide if you want any of your spaces to have special activities, such as roll again, go back two spaces, or go back to start.

When you are finished decorating, it's time to play! Gather your game pieces and start rolling the dice.

You can also fill your spaces with letters, numbers, shapes, sight words, or any other skill you want to practice with your child. If you laminate your file folder before adding anything, you can write on it with a dry erase marker, then change it whenever you like! Here's a few more examples to get you started:

File folders are a brilliant idea. We made our own snakes and ladders game from a cereal box. So much fun to make. It was more a project. However the game folds where the cereal box did so storing it is tricky. A file folder would have been perfect….best not let BG see this otherwise he'll want a new 2009 version.

How fun! We might just have to do this tomorrow. :) Thank you for the ideas!
I actually belong to a file folder social network, but I seriously forget about it! Isn't that bad?!

Just curious what do you use for dice for instance for the color game? Or the letter game? Since regular dice are only numbers.

    Thanks!!!!

Which Halloween candy will you "confiscate" from your children?
