How well do you handle the sudden and unexpected change in your routine and/or schedule?
Yeah, me too.
For the past 3 weeks, our family has dealt with the HINNEY (H1N1)flu, then the regular flu (cause the HINNEY wasn't enough), then of course a little head cold was thrown in for good measure.
This seriously hindered plans. I had pumpkins to decorate, trees to trim, business deals to close, winter coats to buy, and anything else other than wiping a body part that's not mine.
This is where my flexible attitude is supposed to kick in. Gulp.
My favorite description for flexible is "…willing or disposed to yield". And anyone who is a parent knows what an attitude is. No reference needed on that one!
Can you embrace this change? Are you willing to look at it as a challenge to move through and find yourself stronger on the other end?
It's hard. Period.
Here are a few outlooks I've noticed people take on during these glorious moments in life:
- "Jello" – Don't think too hard. Just go with the flow. Almost a happy ignorance. (Think of B.O.B. from the movie Monsters vs. Aliens.)
- "Brick" - This is the I-don't-care-what-you-throw-at-me-I'm-tougher kind of approach. Just barrel right through it!
- "Water" – I love this one! You just conform to the space that you're in. Whether the situation calls for being deep, calm, cool, or all the above; you can adapt and move on.
I think most people pressure themselves to be 'Water' in every situation, but we're not all made of that makeup. How boring if we were all the same!
Even though I think we should all strive to become better 'selves', I love the shades of the various characters we all are. Personally, I find myself jealous of the Jellos, but I'm one of those that try to be the always-adapting Water.
Do you have a flexible attitude? How does it show? What other outlooks have you seen?

Well done, Jen!
Mmmmm, Jello…
Yumm Jello – love the happy ignorance reference. I tend to do that quite a lot – blissful ignorance. Me being a free spirited flexible self, here is a query to ponder upon !
Let us say the container is a situation/another person/family – what if the container is too small/narrow minded and too rigid and our flexible adaptable water selves overflow from the container?? Do we move on/still in a B.O.B mode? Something to think about, eh??
