Fun With Books: Butterflies

Eric Carle is one of my favorite authors. I especially love this book:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle: Book Cover

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Summary:

A tiny caterpillar pops out of his egg one morning and is very hungry. He eats through all kinds of food, only to end up with a stomach ache. He then eats through a leaf and feels much better. Next, he turns into a cocoon, and then a beautiful butterfly!

I love this book because it shows the lifecycle of the butterfly in a fun way! There are actually holes in the book where the caterpillar has "eaten." So cute!

Activity:

Have your children grow their own butterflies! Order a kit on-line. It will be delivered in a couple of days with everything you need. Simply watch your caterpillars eat and grow, crawl to the top and make a chrysallis, and then transform into butterflies. Keep them for a few days, and then release them into nature! Your kids will never forget this!

I like this store, but you can order from anywhere: http://www.butterfly-gifts.com/index.html

Side notes:

1. When I checked Eric Carle's website today, I discovered that this is the 40th Anniversary of this book! Libraries and bookstores are doing all sorts of fun things, and Eric Carle has released a special version of this book! How cool is that!

2. Check my website in about a week for more fun butterfly ideas!
