Mrs. Wishy-Washy by Joy Cowley
Summary:
Cow, Pig, and Duck find some mud and think it would be a lot of fun to play in. But along comes Mrs. Wishy-Washy ready to wash them. "'Into the tub you go.' Wishy-washy. Wishy-washy." Nice and clean. But as soon as she leaves, what do those mud-lovin' animals do?! You got it!! "Oh, lovely mud!"
This is such a great book! Don't the title and the picture just draw you in and make you want to pick this book up?! This book has lots of repetition and fun words. It's also very short, which is good for toddlers' short attention spans. The pictures and story-line are very, very simple. Toddlers and preschoolers LOVE this book!!! It will quickly become a favorite in your house!
Activities:
1. Act it out!! Set up a mud pile (we use a blanket), a big tub (we use our plastic bin), and let each child choose a favorite character to be. Sometimes we use our stuffed animal friends to fill in the extra parts, but even if you don't, you can still have fun! Then, re-tell the story while acting out the parts! You could even supply fun props for each character, such as a scarf for Mrs. Wishy-Washy's hair, a duck-bill for Duck, etc. Switch parts frequently and have fun!
2. Put on a puppet show. Find paper outlines of each animal on-line, color, and glue onto a popsicle stick. Set up a puppet theater (even boxes stacked work well) and re-enact the story to your heart's content. You could also use hand puppets, if you have some available.

This is my all time favorite book for beginning readers. There's so much repetition and rhyming, perfect for young readers. And it's super silly. The kids love talking about rolling in the mud! Fun book, thanks for sharing.
I love this idea! What a great way for kids to learn more from the story and have fun.
I bet your kids love this! They probably want to do it again and again.
