How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long
Summary:
Jeremy Jacob is playing innocently by the beach, when he is captured by pirates! He goes along, thinking a pirate's life is pretty great! They don't have to use table manners, they don't have to take a bath, and they have no bedtime. What more could a young kid ask for?! Then, it's bedtime, and no one reads Jeremy Jacob a bedtime story or tucks him in. That's when he realizes that he misses home. So, he suggests that the pirates bury their treasure in his backyard. And… he makes it home for soccer practice!
Activity:
Read the story, and then tell your children there is treasure buried in your backyard! This treasure hunt can be simple or extravagant. Hide some treasure in a box in your yard–behind a tree, in the garden, etc. You can buy pirate supplies at party supply stores, if you want, or you can just gather items from around your house. Draw a simple treasure map. I like to use tan-colored paper and burn the edges to make it look old. If you want, dress your children in pirate clothes with a patch, hat, and sword. Teach them a couple of pirate phrases, such as "Aye" and send them on their treasure hunt. Loads of fun!
