The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Summary:
Not much beats the wonder of a child on a snowy day! When Peter wakes up to snow one morning, he can't wait to get outside to play in it! He builds a snowman, leaves footprints, makes a snow angel, and the likes. He then goes to sleep dreaming of the snow, only to wake up to more snow… and more fun!
I love how simple this story is. Perfect for preschoolers and young elementary-aged children. I love the creativity, the innocence, and the fun of childhood that is portrayed.
Activity:
What do your children like to do in the snow? I'm always amazed by how creative they are. One thing we like to do is make snow ice cream. This recipe is very forgiving and the variations are endless, which is what makes it so fun!
Snow Ice Cream Recipe:
- 4-5 cups fresh snow – always make sure you've had snow falling a while before you collect snow for ice cream so you know it will be clean and free from contaminates.
- 1 cup milk (any kind is fine, but the thicker the milk, the thicker the ice cream)
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ½ cup sugar
Mix together. You can add more sugar or vanilla, according to your tastes. If it becomes too runny, simply add more snow. You can also add mashed bananas, chocolate or strawberry syrup, coconut, whatever you like!
(There are many variations of snow ice cream on the internet that you can look up. This is one we've created on our own through the years; it's simple, which is what we like!)
Angee enjoys the snow, as long as she doesn't have to drive in it! She has two young children at home, who, of course, love snow. You can check out more of her book recommendations at Stories for Snuggling.

Snowy Day is one of my daughter's favorite books. Especially now with all the snow on the ground. We go out almost everyday (if it's 15 degrees we stay in) and go to the park and make snow angels. If I can find some virgin snow -we have dogs-we'll try the ice cream. B would love that!
I love the recipe- we will definately be makinig ice cream with the next snowfall!
I love this idea. The snow is gone, but we will have to do this with our son when he gets older. Thanks for the great idea! We read this book often, so it is wonderful to get an activity to go along with it. Keep up the great work!
Grandkids and snow are always a lot of fun. Be sure to help lift your child out of the snow angel so you don't leave "tracks." I remember making snow ice cream with my own grandmother–a tasty memory.
We totally did this during our huge storm last year. I even made a photo tutorial here:

I read books like this with my kids so they will know what snow is! (we live in the south)
Thanks for the fun recommendations. Keep it up. You have the best ideas.
I love Ezra Jack Keats. He's one of my favorites. I love his story, Goggles!
