So, we’ve learned that laughing, inhaling our favorite scents and exposure to sunlight all help induce happiness and well-being. After all, when well-meaning children blow ragweed onto your pristine lawn in the name of making a wish and suddenly your lawn is infested, you need a few picker-upers to help calm you down–not that I speak from experience.
Here are a few more ways to help calm, enlighten and infuse your mind with joy:
- Get Nuts ~ No, not batty or insane, get nuts to eat. Research suggests that nuts like walnuts and the like are loaded with Omega-3 which may make you less prone to depression.
- Go! Go! Go! ~ nothing does wonders for calming you down like talking a stroll or a short jog. Breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth while moving around helps to slow the heart rate thereby invoking calmness. Can’t get away? Try sitting where you are, closing your eyes and taking several slow, deep breaths. With each exhale release tension, anger or worry; and breathe in peace, stillness and optimism.
- Get Together ~ Sometimes the best way to curb the blues is to get together with the person who cheers you up the most. Even if you can’t physcially get to them, you can call, email, fax, text or whatever your preferred method of communication is. Happy, cheerful people are infectious; and being around them, even for a short time, will definitely lift your spirits.
Remember, it’s not about the problems you encounter in life’s journey, it’s all about how you handle them that makes the ultimate difference.
