When I first quit my job to stay at home with my kids, I remember telling my husband that I felt I looked like "the housewife from hell." I wasn't wearing my cute work wardrobe anymore, and I had trouble getting a handle on a style that was both fashionable and casual. After a couple of years of trial and error, I've put together some surefire wardrobe staples that are quick and easy to throw on but will keep you looking cute even in the 8 a.m. school drop-off line.
1) A dark wash jean. Go for bootcut, it looks great on everyone. This pair from the Gap is perfect for everyday but works for evening, too.

2) A colorful, plain tee. My favorite tees are from Shade Clothing. Their cap sleeve, pictured below, is very stylish. Go for a bright color or basic black.

3) A bright or patterned scarf. Scarves are the easiest of accessories because you just throw them on and go! Nothing to clasp or fasten, and they dress up ANY outfit! I love this one from the Gap. The pattern is pretty, but not overpowering.

4) A fun bag. This can be a bright, fine leather investment piece, or a fun seasonal bag, like this cross-body from Old Navy (which is less than $10 by the way!). Just like with the scarf, go for either bold color or pretty pattern!

5) A chic pair of flats. Add flair to your casual outfit with shoes that stand out. Go for a bright color or a pair with a cute bow or butterfly detail. I myself live in my flats from Crocs! The Malindi style pictured below comes in tons of bright colors, as well as two fabulous leopard prints.

6) Finally, even if you don't have time to throw on full make-up, swipe on some mascara, lip gloss and blush or bronzer really quick. And if you don't have time to do ANY makeup (or even if you do), round out your look with some fashionable, oversized sunglasses like these Foster Grants, and ta-da! You're everyday chic!

Combine all or most of these wardrobe essentials every day and you'll be the most stylish mama on the block!

Add a cardigan and that is my mama style too!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!

Where I grew up, the Mama style was either a jumper or unattractively tapered jeans (those "Mom jeans" SNL makes fun of…). This is 100x better!
Now…if only I could get those abs…
Ooh..I love scarves now! They are.like.all.the.rave and stuff!!!
Love it! Looks just like my style. I discovered scarves this winter…love them!
