The water had been draining very slowly after my daughter’s bath so we finally tried the following:
- Removed the grate from the bathtub drain
- Poured baking soda into the drain until it was full (~ a small box)
- Slowly poured ~ 4 cups vinegar into the drain
- Let the bubbling combination sit for ~ 10 min
- Poured ~ 4 cups of boiling water down the drain to wash away the baking soda & vinegar
- Cleaned the drain grate & replaced it
- Watched the water flow quickly down the drain!
I have to say, I was quite surprised at how well it worked, the water drained in no time! (I guess mom really does know best)
The best part; no yucky chemicals!
We did the same with our shower drain and it worked just as well. The added bonus in the shower was that it cleaned the floor around the drain.

Go Green Tip: Before you pull the plug on your bath, use the water to water your plants.

I've been doing this for a while now, and it really does work! I've also recently been using baking soda by itself for cleaning the sink, tub, etc. It's about the same texture as Comet or similar products, but no weird chemicals. And it cleans GREAT!
What a great idea Jen. I will have to try that too.
That is a fabulous tip. Thank you! I hate using Drano but sometimes find it necessary. I am bookmarking this to try next time I need it.
Your welcome Michelle! I think the trick is to use this mixture at the first sign of sluggish draining. Let us know how it works for you.
