The fabrics and colours at the Maison & Objet fair in Paris last month were stupendous. Judging by the colours in the majority of fabrics and wallpapers on show, the trends for this year are for soft and muted colours. There were occasional bright oranges, hot pinks, zesty greens and turquoises but much more popular were the delicate pinks, powder blues, leafy greens, soft yellows, duck egg blues and muted purples. Usually very bold and striking, Designer Guild's latest collection is very muted as well.

The look for this season is for very soft, vintage faded colours with an aged look reminiscent of a bygone age. As a result of the credit crunch, we hark back to our past and treasure those well loved pieces of furniture, teaming them with vintage fabrics rather than seeking instant gratification and the latest gadgets.

Earthy tones, leafy greens, desert yellows and ocean blues are also popular as the theme for this year includes a harking back to nature, gaining inspiration from our deserts, forests, beaches and gardens.
It's all about creating a sanctuary or refuge within the home, a space to which we can escape and feel relaxed, to appreciate the solitude and relaxation far away from the stress and rush of the commute, the media, the doom and gloom.
