iPhone Apps for Kids

technology iPhone Apps for KidsI don’t leave the house without my iPhone. I rarely leave the house without children in tow either. This combination is the main reason why I have a half page of apps on my phone dedicated solely for the kids to useĀ - long car rides, waiting in a doctor’s office, or just for fun. My kids like playing with my phone nearly as much as I do.

Some of our favorite iPhone apps for kids are:

Balloonimals Balloonimals – Available in a paid version as well as a free “Lite” version, this app allows kids to blow into the microphone to blow up a balloon. Then, by shaking the phone, the balloon twists into an animal shape (Our favorite is the unicorn). We have the paid version – it has a few more animal options than the Lite. The kids love this – even when they figure out what animal is coming next, they still think this is a lot of fun.

Bubble Wrap Bubble Wrap (FREE) – This free game is a favorite of my seven-year-old. The objective is to pop as many bubble wrap circles as you can in 45 seconds. Make sure you have your volume turned up – half the fun of BubbleWrap is the sound of the popping bubbles!

Pocket Wally Sight Words Pocket Wally Sightwords – This app was given to me to review and my four year old LOVES it. It’s broken down into age-appropriate levels and first introduces a word (by sight and verbally) and then at the next screen, your child has to locate that word and touch the word. A correct guess helps earn “prizes”. An incorrect guess gives your child an opportunity to try again. Both of my daughters had fun with this game – however my second grader is reading above grade level and so the word part of the app seemed secondary for her.

iWrite Words Lite iWriteWords Lite – Another free app that is perfect for my learning-to-write preschooler. This app helps guide you (using his or her finger, your child writes the specific letter or number by guiding an animated crab through the numbered sequence). With upper and lowercase letters as well as numbers, this is definitely a great “starter” app. The paid upgrade takes it a step further, allowing your child to spell three and four-letter words.
