About a week ago, the Washington Post ran a story about the Malual family. Adwai Malual is a 28-year-old Sudanese refugee currently living in Maryland who discovered she was expecting quintuplets while she was in the States seeking the blessing of her mother-in-law over her pregnancy.
Because of complications she was experiencing, Adwai stayed in the United States and was put under the care of a team of doctors to ensure the safe delivery of her babies.
Despite the odds that face this family as refugees in a foreign country – Adwai's husband still has not met his babies, now almost 9 weeks old, because he is serving with the Sudanese army – they had not received much financial assistance or help at all, at least not what you'd expect them to receive considering their circumstances.
After the story broke a week ago, it became a headline on Yahoo.com and news of this family quickly spread across the internet and social media sites. Like everyone else who read this story, the editors at Blissfully Domestic knew we had to do something to help this family, and we started a campaign to get in touch with as many PR representatives at baby care companies as we could.
You can read more about the campaign and how you can help at The One Dollar Give, where I hope to track our efforts and link to all of the stories of generosity from individuals and corporations. Despite the poor economy, few of us face choices as desperate as those faced by Adwai Malual – to stay in the richest country in the world and live in poverty or to return to war-torn Sudan and live in poverty. We can make a difference for this family!
