Photographing to Sell

Many people turn to places like eBay and Craigslist to sell things. When you list an item people from all over can see your item and a good photo of the item is important.  The photo is the only way a potential buyer can see your item for sale.

Here are a few tips for photographing items for sale online.

  • Invest is a neutral backdrop. A piece of black fabric or while fabric can be used.  This will ensure that your item is the only thing in the photo.
  • Refrain from getting too creative with the photo. Just a close-up of the item is all they want to see.
  • Do not photoshop or edit the photo. People may realize you did this and assume you are hiding something
  • Get as many angles of the item as possible.
  • Take close-ups of any labels, stamps, or signatures to show authenticity.
  • Take close-up photos of any damage to the item.
  • Use a tri-pod. You are taking a still photo so a tripod will ensure you have a clear crisp shot.
  • If you are a serious on-line seller investing in a white box with lighting is a great idea

Happy Selling!

  1. You suggested a white box with lighting – do you have any suggestions that wouldn't break the bank? thanks!

  2. You can photograph against white posterboard — it isn't quite the same but you can fudge it!
