I've been letting my two not-yet-independent readers select books from their shelves for reading practice rather than the typical instructional phonics readers. The only problem is that they choose the same books over and other, until they have them nearly memorized.
The solution? Reading bingo! I adapted this idea from some cards we acquired somewhere a few years ago (a summer reading program or fast-food restaurant, I think). I filled up the twenty-five squares with phrases like a book chosen by mom, a book about a dog or a library book. The kids put a sticker over the squares as they read each type of book.
The cards are also easily adaptable for older kids, using phrases such as a non-fiction book, historical fiction or biography. You could also let each square represent a chapter read or a set number of pages.
Once the child gets a bingo or fills up the entire card, they can turn it in for a prize – money, a date night with mom or dad, or another predetermined treat.
