This year, don’t toss those old calendar pages into the trash at the end of the month! Instead, use them as a springboard for a wealth of educational opportunities. You can build math skills and practice written expression with calendar pages.
Use the pictures from a calendar as fodder for creative writing. Challenge your writers to think of ten descriptive words to go with the picture or try writing five sentences about it. Tell the story of what happened before or after the picture was taken or what is just to the left of the camera’s viewfinder.
Your student(s) can also try some math challenges. Cut the dates apart and practice putting numbers back in order. Try reverse order or counting by 2’s or 3’s. Glue the numbers to paper ransom-note style and add math operation symbols to form problems and answers. See if your child can write a story problem to match five dates on the calendar, or use the calendar to calculate the number of days, weeks or months between two events.
These ideas only scratch the surface of what you can do with old calendars. Don’t waste this educational resource. Tap into it today!
