Now that the cold weather is coming back so are my husband's pressure headaches but this year he has a secret weapon for dealing with them.
Have you heard of this tea-pot looking contraption?
You might have seen it featured on Oprah last year. Or maybe, like us, you saw/heard of it while watching the HBO show Six Feet Under. Or maybe you have never heard of it before.
Nasal saline irrigation is a Ayurvedic/yoga medical traditional therapy that uses a salt and water solution to flush out the nasal cavity by using the Neti Pot.
- Mix up a warm salt water solution, slowly pour half of the solution through one nostril while it drains out the other side, switch sides.
- After all the solution has been filtered through your nose then blow your nose to remove excess fluids.
- Breath freely for days.
Last winter, after trying every allergy type medicine on the market, both prescription and non-proscription, without feeling any relief my husband finally gave in and reluctantly tried The Neti Pot.
He could hardly believe the wonderful relief he felt after just one use. From that moment on, The Neti Pot has been in regular use at our house.
My 9 yr old son actually uses it too, with daddy's help of course, and will even ask for it when he feels like he needs it.
According to Web MD :
- Many patients with chronic sinus symptoms from bacterial infections, allergies, and environmental irritants also have begun to regularly use the Neti pot or other nasal irrigation devices, claiming that these devices alleviate congestion, facial pain and pressure, and reduce the need for antibiotics and nasal sprays.
- Research backs up these claims, finding that nasal irrigation can be an effective way to relieve sinus symptoms when used along with standard sinus treatments.
- The basic explanation of how the Neti pot works is that it thins mucus to help flush it out of the nasal passages. Saline solution can help increase the speed and improve coordination of the cilia so that they may more effectively remove the bacteria, allergens, and other irritants that cause sinus problems.
It is very important to properly and thoroughly clean the Neti Pot after every use to prevent infection.
Most stores now sell the Neti Pot and refill packets next to all the sinus relief medicines.
Now that the cold dry weather is coming back you can bet that our Neti Pot is coming back too!

WHAT? No video
LOL! I will ask my hubby if he is willing to let me video tape him but remember the saying, becareful what you wish for….
It was just suggested that I try one of those. It sounds less than pleasant, though. Can you perhaps assure me that it's not too bad?
I can try Lisa
The sensation is one that takes some getting use to. You probably want to perform the process alone and you definitely don’t want to look in the mirror while you are doing it cuz you don’t want to laugh. Read the directions all the way through. Twice. Good Luck and let me know how it works for you!
I use this one – http://www.neilmed.com
Year before last I had surgery to remove a tumor around my pituitary and they went through my nose. Ever since then I am super prone to sinus infections and stuffy noses. My Ear Nose & Throat surgeon recommended this and it really does work.
It does feel really odd until you get used it. Kind of like when you get pool water up your nose when swimming, except it doesn't burn at all. But you feel SO much better afterwards.
I LOVE my neti pot! I got a terrible cold last year. I even ended up having to quickly make a trip to the doctor because my asthma got so bad I was having a lot of trouble breathing and was put on heavy doses of oral and inhaled steroids. Anyway I can't take decongestants because my resting heart rate is 90-100 and I have slightly high blood pressure, both of which are made worse when you use decongestants. Also both get raised due to asthma meds anyway.
So I used my neti pot every few hours. It was so hopeful in letting me get a little sleep. I use it for allergies as well.
I'm all over the neti pot. It is hard to convince others of its magic, but, for me, it's the only way to flush out the nasal grime. Thanks!
I am glad to hear that the Neti Pot is working so well for all of you. I also like to hear that doctors are recommending it too. Thanks for your feedback!
