Setting the Table With Gratitude

I'm not one to design elaborate tablescapes. I've seen episodes of Sandra Lee's show on the Food Network and for every meal she's got some frou-frou table setting design that makes my head spin. I don't want a fussy table – really all I want is my family sitting together, sharing a meal, conversation and laughter.

Thanksgiving, well, that's an exception. I like a little bit more of a "fuss" – but I like it kid-style. While I'm preparing desserts (my mother loves to cook Thanksgiving dinner – and I gladly let her because I'm a rotten cook and an awesome baker), I like to let my kids – namely my oldest – draw placecards for the table. Along with each person's name, she writes a reason why she is thankful for that person.

It doesn't have to be a huge deal – this year, she may thank grandpa for getting the Taylor Swift cd for her to sing karaoke, or thank my sister for bringing her new puppy over. The point is twofold: Get the kids involved in the preparation of the meal, and to show them how easy it is to show our appreciation for each other.
