I got my digital SLR, so I could do more with my photography. I learned how to use the manual settings and took most of the 50,000 photos the first year with manual settings.
Manual settings for a rose work well. But insisting on using manual settings for EVERYTHING meant I was missing memories.
Sometimes I just have a few seconds to photograph a car dressed as Rudolph.

Other times the moment will be gone if I'm not quick, such as on Christmas Day, watching my cousin open the present my husband bought her.

And then there's the situation in which you haven't a CLUE how things will shake down, such as when we went to see the Snow Angel a few weeks ago.

I might not have gotten ANY of these shots if I'd not put the camera on auto.
The take-away? Manual or creative settings (such as sports mode, etc.) are wonderful, but sometimes it's better just to put the camera on auto and let her rip.
I wish I'd learned this lesson awhile ago. I'd have many more memories in the form of a photograph if I had.
