According to statistics, nearly one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That is a lot of women whose lives are impacted by the disease – and when you take into account that it could be us, our sisters, our mothers, our daughters, our friends — people we love — well, the web of people affected by breast cancer extends even further.
And it’s not okay.
At Blissfully Domestic, we talk about nurturing our souls, our families, our spiritual self– but health? That’s pretty important too. Our dream is to see the day when a cure is found and breast cancer becomes a thing of the past.
In June, I joined an awesome team (I met them on Twitter!) in Chicago to walk forty miles in support of fighting breast cancer. For two days, I was so moved by the stories and the cause. It’s more than pink ribbons: When you see the faces of survivors walking next to you – and you realize that these survivors are filled with strength, both physically and emotionally, and have endured so much already – yet raised money and came out to walk a marathon and a half to help ensure that one day, no one else will have to battle this disease.
We’re teaming up with the awesome crew at HANES to form TEAM BLISSFULLY DOMESTIC to take part in the Susan G, Komen Race for a Cure (don’t worry! This event is NOT forty miles!). In locations around the country, we hope to have people walking for a cure on behalf of Hanes and Team BD. You may visit the Susan G. Thank you Sarah and to all who walk in raising funds for breast cancer research! I was diagnosed with breast cancer October 1st last year….the first day of breast cancer awareness month. I was only 44 years old. Breast cancer is striking women younger and younger each year. Because of such high funding raised in the breast cancer walks, the type of aggressive breast cancer that I have can be treated with a targeted gene therapy used only in the last 5 – 7 years! I am currently 8 months through with my 12 month chemo regimen. I am very hopeful that after I finish my treatment I will have an 82% chance of remaining cancer free in 10 years! It is women like you who embrace our sisterhood and join hands to make breast cancer a thing of the past! Let’s pray our daughters won’t have to deal with this disease when they grow up.
