The number of children being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders continues to rise. Add to this the myriad of ways each child is affected by and reacts to the various symptoms he suffers from, and you've got an often misunderstood group of children in our schools, churches, and daycare facilities among other places.

In a recent Chicago Tribune article, Julie Deardorff tackled the issue of a growing population of children with autism and the battles that they, and their parents, are facing.

It's easy to see how a child with autism or Asperger's could frustrate a teacher with limited or no knowledge of the disorder. Problems inevitably arise when autistic behavior is misinterpreted as willful disobedience, something that a child – or parent – can control.
