Have you ever noticed that when you get hurt, your whole body is affected? One tiny little stubbed toe in the middle of the night causes your head to ache and your leg to throb. The next day, you can barely walk. It's amazing that all the pain you're experiencing came from one tiny toe.
It's no accident that the Lord used the analogy of the body to describe His church in 1 Corinthians 12.
In a discussion about helping at a local homeless shelter during the holiday season, my Pastor pointed out that while sharing Jesus with those we meet there is important, it's wrong to assume just because they are there means they don't know Him already. I'll admit this shot conviction right to my heart.
When a friend or loved one calls to tell us of a struggle they are experiencing, we often embrace them and hurt right along with them. We cry with them over lost jobs, lost loved ones and various other things that bring hurt to those we love. We try to help them out in any way we can and provide for their needs according to our ability. If they are sick, we bring them meals and care for their kids.
Our friends and those who attend our church are not the only members of our spiritual Body. Shouldn't we stop and help in the rehabilitation process for the other members, as well? As the Body of Christ, I'm sad I don't see the whole body being affected by the ailing members that aren't on their speed dial. I'm speaking here from true conviction because this is something I can't seem to get out of my heart. I'm fairly good at taking care of those members of Christ's Body I know and love, but when it comes to stepping out loving on those who are really sick, I tend to fail miserably.
I want to have a heart that loves the Body of Christ so much that when even His pinky toe is sore, I can barely move until I have taken care of his hurt.
