Judging by the bags of Christmas, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day Cards that Troy Dunn recieves from families he has helped reunite, he is making a difference in people's lives we can only imagine. The host of the immensely popular show on WeTV, The Locator, Troy takes his 20+ years of experience in reuniting family members with missing loved ones and chronicles the journey on the show.
Troy and his team choose their featured Angel Cases based on several factors, but gut instinct plays a big role. His cases vary from adoptees just looking for birth parents to extreme situations where people are in search of lost loved ones as organ donors. He says often the ones he feels he will conclude quickly are ones he can't solve at all, and the reverse is true too. When asked if he has had formal training in investigative or social work areas, he said, no, but that his passion and drive come from "following the direction your heart takes you."
If you are a fan of the story, you already know that his journey began some 20 years ago when he reunited his mom who was adopted with her biological family. He saw an opportunity and things took off from there. When asked to work on a reality TV show, he was cautious at first because the nature of these shows is that there is "nothing real about them," . Troy feels that in his line of work, "there is something real and genuine about reaching out to people" in this way and he wanted the integrity of the moments maintained, so nothing is staged. What you see is what is actually happening.
As Season 2 gets going we have already seen his disappointment in not being able to reunite one family. Sometimes family members don't want to be found. He says he will spend several hours on the phone trying to sort through the whys, but is very careful not to cross the line.
Once the family is reunited, Troy is out of the picture. The reunion is about the family; he's not there for the glory. Sunglasses on…walk to the rental car…and a good cry on the way to the airport. He finds it hard to detach emotionally, but holds it together for the family. "I'm no good to them, if I can't keep it together while I'm working with them." But this ex-football player will tell you, by the end he's emotionally drained.
Season 2 is still in production. If there is someone with whom you want to be reunited or know someone who is looking for answers, go to WeTV.com or TroytheLocator.com. You may be in time to reconnect and be featured in this season's lineup.
