It's hard to believe, but the new school year is almost here. Whether you have school age children or not, this time of year definitely gets you to start thinking about stocking up on some great new Fall and Winter fashions for you and your family. Many states are now offering sales tax holidays to help you out with what can be a very expensive shopping trip.

Now, there are some things to keep in mind when going out to shop during your state's sales tax holiday (for a complete list by state of the dates for your state's sales tax holiday, click here. If your state is anything like mine, sales for the Saturday of the tax holiday are more than the day after Thanksgiving, so you can only imagine the crowds! Here are some things to keep in mind.

1) Scout out what you want before you go. If you have certain things in mind, go the week before to see what you might want and try things on. Lines at the fitting rooms will be outrageous, so doing some of that before the crowds hit will save you a lot of time.

2) Be patient. There are going to be a lot of people doing the same thing you are trying to do. Being patient will ensure you have a pleasant, low-stress shopping trip.

3) If you are shopping for older children and teens, take them on the scouting trip. If at all possible, let them pick things out a head of time. More people makes more stress. Definitely try to get a baby sitter for the smaller ones in your family, or bring your spouse and let them go play in the mall's play area (if there is one).

4) Have fun! Remember, you are doing this to save your family some money and make sure everyone has clothes for the Fall. Make sure to get yourself a few nice things while you are at it. I know in my state, taking off the sales tax eliminates about 10% off of what I would normally pay, so the savings are incredible.
