Topiary Trees for Winter Color

Topiary trees add color and interest to special spaces in our homes.

Once the evergreens, twinkling lights, and holiday decor are stored away until next year, our homes may appear a bit drab.  And, unfortunately, the season of winter does not lend much natural lighting to indoor settings.  To add some color, why not try a topiary on a table in the living room or dining room, or on a counter in the kitchen?

Making a Topiary Tree

Topiary trees can be made of a combination of plant materials, including live herbs, fresh fruit, and dried flowers.  Better Homes and Gardens suggests using the following items for a simple ivy topiary and describes 4 simple steps in creating this arrangement.

  • Potting soil
  • A spherical topiary frame (10-12 inches in diameter) with spikes at the base for anchoring it into the soil
  • A pot large enough in circumference to contain the frame
  • A full-fledged ivy (your favorite variety) with long, trailing runners or six single ivies with long runners
  • Green twine or raffia to tie up the ivy
  • Ribbon and ornaments for decorative accents

Whether you find one to buy or make it yourself, a topiary will add charm to any corner of your home.
