Untying the Apron Strings

family Untying the Apron Strings

When my son began pre-school some 22 years ago, it was I who had the separation anxiety. I must have driven back and forth by the pre-school for the entire few hours that he was there. He is my only child and we have always had a very special bond, but it has always been ME who had the more difficult time letting go.

He telephoned me yesterday to let me know that he was planning on asking his girlfriend to marry him (on Valentine's Day) and wanted my opinion regarding a ring. Mind you, he's STILL IN COLLEGE, but with only one semester to go before graduation. She's still got two years left. I asked if they were going to wait until SHE graduates, and he gave me a vague answer.

He had asked her dad for his blessing first. I've never met her family, but I know that I will like them. When my son said that they would just go to the courthouse to get married, her father offered a large wedding, if they'll wait two years for him to save money to pay for it (hmm….that seems to coincide PERFECTLY with her graduation – I told you I'll like him).

Anyway, I should be happy for him. He's found a woman who makes him happy and when you see them together, even after dating for a couple of years, it is obvious that they complement each other very well.

So, why am I having such a difficult time untying the apron strings?
