A few, short years ago I was living in San Francisco, engaged to the man I loved, and intent on climbing the corporate ladder. Okay, the only part of that information that’s germane to this post is the fact that I was engaged, but I just like to include the rest for history’s sake.
Sometime in that year prior to saying our vows, I heard the song I Will Be Here, by Steven Curtis Chapman. Later, this became a popular wedding song, but at the time it was just a beautiful window into some of the commitment that marriage brings.
All of these years later (because, really, it’s been more than a few), these lyrics still resonate. Here are a few of the most salient points.
Marriage isn’t about talking all of the time; but it is about listening.
I will be here when you feel like being quiet;
When you need to speak your mind, I will listen.
Marriage isn’t all fun and games. It’s about walking through the fun and the not-so-fun together.
And I will be here when the laughter turns to crying;
Through the winning, losing, and trying, we’ll be together…
Marriage isn’t about certainty. It’s about supporting one another. Every time.
Tomorrow morning if you wake up
And the future is unclear,
I will be here.
Marriage isn’t about youthful beauty. It’s about sharing a life:
When the mirror tells us we’re older, I will hold you.
And I will be here to watch you grow in beauty,
And tell you all the things you are to me;
I will be here.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks, Steven Curtis Chapman!

Kirsetin – You two are so darn cute! I must be living under a rock b/c I’ve never heard that song. Beautiful.
I heard that song when SSC released his “All About Love” album. It was our wedding song (June 8th, 2008), it still makes me tear up.
What a beautiful reminder!
A beautiful wedding song made even more meaningful through the years of marriage. Great choice!
A great post and a beautiful song. I’m 53 and have been married almost 23 years. A couple of years ago, I took some American Sign Language classes in college. We were required to learn to sign a song of our choice by the end of each semester. This was the song I signed in class at the end of my second semester.
