Do you have any inexpensive laminate furniture in your home? I sure do. I was always looking at it wondering if it could be transformed. My husband said it couldn't be done. My mother said it shouldn't be done. I decided to prove them wrong.
In the process, I found that there are three keys to successful laminate painting:
- Thoroughly sand every inch of the piece you are painting to remove the glossy finish;
- Prime with a good quality primer that is made for laminate-type surfaces (I like Zinsser's Bulls Eye 1-2-3, which can be found in home improvement stores);
- Allow primer to fully cure, which means more than letting it dry. Each primer has different cure rates, but Zinsser's is 7 days. Let the primer sit for 7 full days before you paint it. This will make it resistant to scratches.

After you follow those three steps, you're ready to apply the paint color of your choice and transform your inexpensive laminate into a work of art. It's a very simple process; it just takes some patience. It will definitely be worth it in the end!
