Taking a page from my friend Abby’s book, I decided to look to my son’s favorite books for inspiration this month. He is still young at 18 months so crafts can be a challenge. However, I do think it’s a worthwhile endeavor and he usually enjoys it! So we decided to read the popular Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and then make our own caterpillar turned beautiful Butterfly!
Making Butterfly Wings from Hangers
I had a supply of wire hangers leftover from a consignment sale so I took two that were covered with white paper and tucked each hanger hook inside the opposite hanger’s paper sleeve. Once the sharp hooks were hidden, I used scotch tape to secure the connection and keep it together. Voila, wings!
Decorating the Wings
I decided to let my son color and place stickers all over the wings. I used stickers that would call back to the book, fruits and vegetables, cookies, caterpillars and butterflies. I traced around the outside of the wings for added definition. Then it was time for the body!
Creating a Caterpillar Using Egg Cartons
We decided to use a section of 4 spots from an egg carton and painted them to look like the famous caterpillar. We loved the painting stage! I think this was probably his favorite part and also the first time he used a paintbrush. Once I convinced him that it was NOT a spoon, we were good to go! I added some button stickers for the eyes and a pipe cleaner for his antennae and another pipe cleaner to attach the body to the wings.
This was a very easy craft and fun for both of us using items we already have. It was a great exercise in creativity for me to look through his books and find inspiration as well. Have you made a book-to-craft creation? Let us know in the comments!
