Coming Soon to New Jersey - Children’s Bill of Rights

    Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

homeschool-bliss Coming Soon to New Jersey - Childrens Bill of RightsAs a homeschooler, one of my primary interests is how bills such as NJ’s Childrens’ Bill of Rights affect my choice to homeschool.

But this one is different - it will affect ALL parents and ALL children and EVERY taxpayer in NJ.

Carolee Adams, the president of Eagle Forum in New Jersey, has formed an advocacy group on Facebook called “STOP S.2334 - THE NEW JERSEY CHILDREN’s BILL OF RIGHTS!” In her recent post she states:

This Bill represents another unfunded mandate of the already bankrupt State of New Jersey, and a Bill that will undermine the sacred role of parental rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children. Under S2334, those parental rights will then be transferred to the State which will then have the unequivocal authority to decide what is in the best interests of the child in matters concerning health, safety, well-being, and physical and mental development. This intrusive Bill expands the role of the State into the privacy of the family structure in countless ways…

In June of 2006, I posted an article in my blog by homeschooling mom Alexandra Cohen about how her husband, the editor of the Brussels Journal was threatened with prosecution by Belgian authorities because they felt he had not adequately educated his children, and hence, neglected his duties as a parent, which is a criminal offense in Belgium.

This criminal offense is a function of Belgium’s status as a signatory nation on the totalitarian power grab known as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the same treaty that the sponsors of S.2334 are using as the basis for this dangerous New Jersey bill.

Michael Farris pointed out that in 1995 “the United Kingdom was deemed out of compliance” with the Convention “because it allowed parents to remove their children from public school sex-education classes without consulting the child.” The HSLDA chairman said that, “by the same reasoning, parents would be denied the ability to homeschool their children unless the government first talked with their children and the government decided what was best. Moreover, parents would no longer have the right to bring up their children according to their own philosophical or religious beliefs, as the government, following the guidelines of a UN “committee of experts” would determine what religious teaching, if any, served the child’s best interest.”

Under President Obama, we are likely to see the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, CEDAW, and other UN treaties that have never been ratified brought up for another vote, sweeping us farther away from constitutional law. Obama has openly promised to “embrace the rule of international law.”

New Jersey, always proud to line up behind anything that will further tax or regulate its beleagured citizens, is only the first of many states that will be willing to pass similar bills.

ANOTHER New Jersey bill affecting Homeschooling - CALL NOW

    Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

homeschool-bliss ANOTHER New Jersey bill affecting Homeschooling - CALL NOW

When it rains, it pours in the People’s Republic of New Jersey.

Our faithful legislators don’t stop in their quest to regulate our children’s education - what they learn, when they learn it, and for how long they have to learn it.

Now they are revisiting compulsory attendance. A.375 isn’t actually a new bill - they have been batting it around all year.

They’ve said it wouldn’t affect homeschooling, but HSLDA has a different take on it, and is asking for calls right away to stop this latest attempt to encroach upon our parental rights and expand government control over our children.

This bill is set for hearing in the Assembly Appropriations Committee THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23.

You can read more about this at my blog or you can visit HSLDA’s site. This affects all families, not just homeschool families.

Latest Update on the “Education Begins at Home” Act

    Thursday, October 9th, 2008

EducationMany thanks to those of you who contacted your Representatives about H. R. 2343, the deceptively-named “Education Begins At Home Act.”

    Your calls made a difference!

Congress has “left the building” for the 110th session, and this bill never came up for a vote. If for some reason Congress reconvenes for a lame duck session after Election Day when they no longer fear the wrath of voters, they may decide to schedule H.R. 2343 for a vote at that time.

We will keep you advised of developments, and whether it is necessary for you to apply more pressure to your Representative to oppose this Nanny State bill.

    Prison for Homeschooling?

    Monday, September 22nd, 2008

If you live in Germany, you just might have to serve prison time for homeschooling your kids. Currently, Germany does not tolerate homeschooling for any reason, citing laws dating to the glorious 30s (a.k.a. Hitler). Even foreigners living in Germany temporarily, such as US military families stationed in Germany, are not supposed to homeschool.

HSLDA updates us this week on the plight of two homeschooling families in Germany.

“The Gorber family personally experienced the raw power of the German government when six of their children were viciously seized by the Jugendamt and taken without parental knowledge or consent in January of this year. The Gorbers are longtime homeschoolers.” HSLDA

In this case there is good news & bad news. The good news is the Jugendamt decided to release the Gorber children to the custody of their parents pending a family court hearing on September 25. They can live at home but must attend a public school.

In another case the parents have been sentenced to 90 days in prison each for homeschooling. The family reports local school officials have initiated a new set of criminal charges against them for homeschooling.

It is worth asking could that happen here?

It is by the grace of God the eleven Christians arrested in Philadelphia for the “hate crime” of sharing the Gospel at a homosexual event a few years ago did not actually go to prison for the incredible 47 years they faced. Even though video of the events clearly showed the Christians were not violent, Philadelphia police & officials insisted on interpreting their every move as hostile. Four of the defendants were charged with ethnic intimidation & rioting — among other things.

What does that have to do with homeschooling?

It shows things we don’t believe could ever happen here are already happening. If people can’t be sure they have First Amendment rights on a public street, how can parents be sure they have the right to teach their children at home, privately & away from Big Brother’s watchful eye?

This is a germ of the same idea that has resulted in the prosecution of these German parents. While this is not likely to happen in the United States any time soon, it is definitely something to think about.

Would YOU be willing to serve 90 days in prison for homeschooling?
