Digital Scrapbooking – display methods

On my last post, A Scrapbooking Style For Everyone! I was asked a very simple question that I overlooked in writing about… "what do you do with it after you've scrapped it?" So today that's what I am going to address.

Some people simply keep them on their computer and display them in online galleries within the digital scrapbooking community. That's what I used to do. But now my DD is wanting to see them so I've been coming up with ideas of displaying some of my layouts.

One thing you can do is print them, I resize my 12×12 layouts to 8×8 and print them on an 8×10 photo paper at my local photo developing company (Walmart, lol). For tips on printing, you might want to check out a little tutorial I wrote on my personal blog called T3 (Tips, tricks &/or tutorials) Tips for printing digital scrap projects. I then display my printed layouts in some 8×8 scrapbook albums that I bought at Staples. My albums are themed and the series I'm working on printing right now is called Allysandra Through The Years, with each album having a different chapter in my DD's life including The First Year, The Toddler Years and my current project… The PreSchool Years.

You can also frame the printed layouts. I have 3 of my favourite layouts of my DD printed and framed and are hanging on what we call my DD's art wall. There are 2 curtain rods hanging on her wall, on the top one we hang the framed layouts and on the bottom one we hang current artwork of hers. I used curtain rod clips to clip the artwork and clear plastic frames. She loves it. Want to see a picture?

I made a fabric "sleeve" for the curtain rod because it was old and un-pretty. This dressed it up a bit and can be changed. If you can afford nicer curtain rods then that would look great too!

Back to the display methods! Another thing you can do is mini albums! You can create them simply in 4×6" format and print them to display them in a brag book photo album. These make perfect gifts for the grandparents, or for themed albums. Or you can get creative and create your layouts in other shapes and sizes. Like I did for my DD's colour album, I created the pages in a circle shape and printed the circles on 5×7 photo paper. I then cut them out and pasted them onto some old CDs, punched a hole in each one using a tool called a crop-a-dile and added a loose leaf ring and some ribbon! She loves it! It's also a good idea to use a sealer (I like a spray on sealer) if the album will be handled by any children, it helps to protect it. Want to see a picture of my finished mini CD album?

There are so many different things that you can do with digital scrapbooking products and photo editing programs, you don't have to stop with the typical layout. But that's a post for another day!

I hope I've inspired you and perhaps intrigued you enough for you to check out digital scrapbooking for yourself. And in case you missed my first post here, it is full of Digital Scrapbooking 101 links and info! See you all next time, meanwhile… Have a Happy Scrappy Day!

Digital Scrapbooking 101 – links

Hi, my name is Monique aka mpatry, and I am the author of Monique's Scrappin blog, a regular blogger for Daisie Co's Blog, and now I have been given the opportunity to write for the Blissfully Domestic blog too! I'm sooo excited about joining the team here, and will be bringing you posts about what else? Digital scrapbooking!

I've been asked by many people what digital scrapbooking is, what do they need to get started, and how do they create a layout. So I'm here to bring you some links to what I feel are the best tutorials and sites for anyone wanting to know where to begin with digital scrapbooking.

Here are my favourite sites and tutorials with the absolute basics explained…

Digital Scrapbooking 101 – start here if you have no idea where to start, it's a short description of what digital scrapbooking is, and what you need to know in 5 steps.

Digital Scrapbook Place Tutorials -  this is the largest series of tutorials that I've found that are perfect for the beginner and that cover a good range of programs including PSP (Paint Shop Pro), PS (Photoshop) and PSE (Photoshop Elements). Some of their tutorials include Creating Your First Layout, Scrapping Techniques, Photo Manipulation and Effects, Giving Proper Credit and even a Glossary which includes a lot of the terms used in digital scrapbooking forums and communities.

Shop For Photo-Editing Software – click here to download a software comparison chart to help you decide which of the many programs might be right for you.

Hummie's World Tutorials! - An amazing selection of tutorials separated into "classes", many are available in a written format, and for subscribers she also offers video tutorials! Some of her basics include how to choose a program, printing, lingo of our digi-scrapping world, organizing, and "Necessary Basics – First Layout Tutorial"!

Cottage Arts Tutorials – this site has a large selection of tutorials, basic and program specific.

Scrapgirls' Free e-book – Check out this free e-book called "15 Things You NEED to Know to Become a GREAT Digital Scrapbooker (FREE Starter e-book) ".

Digital Scrapbooking 101 - "The place to learn digital scrapbooking". This is a new site that's geared towards the beginner scrapper. Focuses mostly on Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS3 programs.

Ready to get started? Don't spend your money on digital scrapbooking products just yet! Not until you're really certain that this is what you want to get into, because trust me… it can get pricey with all the (instantly available) digital goodies available out there! Instead you should download a few of the many freebies available out there to test this hobby out and see what you think. Check out a post from my personal blog that includes links to my (personal) top 10 places to find scrapbooking freebies.

A couple more places you might like to check out for inspiration and information include:

And three of my favourite sites for friendly forums and inspiring galleries are:

But there are many, many more out there… so feel free to go searching, you never know what you're going to find!
