Studying!
Whether your child has been given a holiday project, or has tests or quizzes after the break or just needs some extra support over the holidays, here’s a recipe that will help you and your family support your child’s studies this holiday season.
1) 8 chunks of study
Help your child divide the task up into small chunks. For example, if your child has a science quiz after the break, divide their revision material into 8 chunks, one for each study day (yes let them have a few days with no studies!)
2) 8 tablespoons of time
Fix a time each day for study, whether it be an actual time (e.g. 11 am) or a time fixed to an event, after lunch, after the shopping trip. (First thing after breakfast is a great time to get study “out of the way”.) Two minutes is enough time to do some maths drills with your younger children and half an hour of researching and writing up for a teenager’s geography project should be sufficient.
3) A cup of peace and quiet
Make sure the house is relatively quiet during study time. Let house guests know about the study plan in advance. Perhaps this is a great time for everyone in the family to read a book or newspaper, menu plan or catch up on some paperwork.
4) A quart of encouragement
Acknowledge that your child is studying when others from their peers may not be. Praise them for their hard work and point out how proud you are that they’re taking time out to learn something new over the holiday!
Mix together with plenty of rest, relaxation and holiday cheer!
Enjoy!
