Cooking with Kids

Cooking is an important life skill that is fun for most kids and can be easily integrated into the homeschool day. The key is to keep things simple and not stress:
- Don’t limit yourself to kids cookbooks. There are lots of excellent books on making simple meals. Start with one with plenty of great photos and pick a dish you both want to try.
- Have everything you need and substitute ingredients if necessary. Nothing is more frustrating than having to stop because you need to run out for eggs.
- Do some of the prep work. Chop up any meat or vegetables ahead of time, depending on your child’s age and ability, but allow them to do the measuring.
- Teach them the relationship between the different cup and spoon measurements in case the one you’re looking for is missing. Cooking is a great way to incorporate some living math!
- Don’t worry too much about accuracy. How many of us really cook with a full arsenal of measuring spoons? Show them the measurments, but allow them to eyeball it once in a while.
- Let them do the actual cooking, with supervision. Kids love stirring things on the stove top.
- Listen to their input. If they think it would be great to add olives to their clam linguine, let them try it.
- Cleaning up is part of the game! Have them help clean up, even if it’s just sponging off the table or sweeping the floor.
- Give them credit! Thank them for the meal when it’s time to eat.
Most importantly, enjoy the process with your kids and don’t stress about the mess. Not only are you teaching them an important skill that they will use well into their adult lives, you are making memories through quality time spent together.

Love this…I am HUGE on cooking with my kids, and somehow we seem to do a lot of rolls as well.
