A few days ago Blissful Kids introduced us to a fun new tradition we can begin with our children the Storytime Christmas Countdown. I actually started doing this last year. One of the benefits of having a Grandma who is a librarian and a Nana who teaches 2nd grade is a LOT of children’s books.
One of our very favorites is Christmas in the Barn by Margaret Wise Brown (although we have the edition illustrated by Barbara Cooney). If you have a preschooler or toddler who loves The Big Red Barn, you will love this one as well.
Our other favorite picks for best Christmas Picture Book?
Once There Was A Christmas Tree by Jerry Smath, A Magical Snow globe book about the joys of sharing with those who have less than we do.
The Christmas Star by Marcus Pfister is a beautiful and sparkly picture book about following the Christmas star. The illustrations are lovely and can spark discussions with youngsters.
Shhh! by Julie Sykes is a sweet little board book in which Santa’s exuberance for all things Christmas earns him repeated sushing not to wake the children.
Santa Cows by Cooper Edens is a cute story in which Santa’s sleigh is pulled by Cows instead of Reindeer. Much hilarity and even a pickup game of baseball ensues.
And our final favorite pick is Santa Mouse Treasury a very sweet story about a little mouse who realizes no one gives a gift to Santa. And when he decides to give him his very best cheese Santa gives him a name and a job as his helper delivering presents on Christmas Eve.
What is your favorite children’s Christmas story book?

We read When Washington Crossed the Delaware: A Wintertime Story by Lynne Cheney on Christmas Eve.
We do a Christmas story countdown too! I’ll be posting about our choices most days at my blog.
Our first book is always Jan Brett’s Christmas Treasury – both because it’s big and beautiful and also because December 1st is Jan Brett’s birthday.
We also delight in excellent stories about believing in Santa for the slightly older kids, including “Santa Calls” by William Joyce, “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg, and “Red Ranger Came Calling” by Berkeley Breathed.
