Help your kids learn to hold their pencils correctly

Rachel, an Extraordinary Wife and Homeschooling mom of five in Ohio, sent in this great tip that was passed on to her from an Occupational Therapist. If your child is having trouble learning to hold their pencil correctly the answer is simple. Hang a chalkboard or piece of paper on the wall or fridge. Give your child a tiny length (1 inch) of chalk/pencil to write with. This will ensure your child grasps the pencil with the thumb and forefinger. Over time this finger positioning will become more and more comfortable. Thanks Rachel!

Ooh! I can’t wait to try this on my 2 1/2 year old. Now, can you teach me how to teach my 6 year old to tie his shoes? Please?
Great idea! Also golf pencils tend to work really well for pencil grips for the same reason.

Oh…if you had any idea (you probably do) how much my son and I go AROUND AND AROUND about this – both of us ending up in tears Even Though we use the “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum (smile)…

I have a cousin who was a PreK teacher. She broke all her students crayons in half to teach them this principle. I need to to the same. My DD is left handed and is struggling with holding her pencil.

My son had issues with holding a pencil after his preschool teacher (special ed for speech therapy) refused to put pencils in the kids’ hands so I had to teach him to write over the summer before he started homeschooling. One of the suggestions I received was to break his crayons into tiny pieces.
