Meet the Bales, our Homeschooling Family of the week!
Why they decided to homeschool:
The short answer to that is: the public school that my older daughter was in was not meeting her needs, educationally, and had no plan as to how to rectify that situation. We decided to try homeschooling for a year and go from there. It was clear to all of us, within the first four months, that homeschooling was the right choice for our family. That was in 2002 and we’ve never looked back.
The Education method they subscribe to:
We are eclectic homeschoolers with a classical bent and a little twist of Charlotte Mason. Our alphabet soup list of curriculum attests to our “eclecticity.”
Favorite subjects and Learning activities:
Brianna loves grammar, believe it or not, Josh loves math, and Megan loves all the fun learning games we play. We all love to explore history together through great literature and hands-on activities.
Least favorite subjects and Learning activities:
Neither of the girls are very fond of math and Josh finds reading, his area of weakness, very frustrating.
What they want to be when they grow up:
Everybody agrees that the jury is still out on this one. Right now, everyone just enjoys exploring their talents and areas of interest.
Students’ favorite/least favorite thing about being homeschooled:
Brianna loves having time to each lunch every day. Isn’t it sad that after six years of homeschooling she still says that? Josh loves being able to stay up late and sleep in most mornings. Megan loves learning through games and hands-on activities. None of them has a “least favorite” other than the particular school subject that they don’t particularly care for. We really are a family in love with the blessing of homeschooling. Brianna has even been known to tell moms that we’ve met on the playground that they should consider homeschooling their kids (which can be a little embarrassing!). Even my niece, who is schooling with us this year, told me recently that she doesn’t want to go to public school next year; she wants to keep coming to Aunt Kris’ school.
