My thirteen year-old son is a high functioning teen on the autism spectrum. Some of the deficits for those on the autism spectrum include – not recognizing social nuances, lack of proper etiquette and poor hygiene. Homeschooling seems to be working in his favor. He no longer seems to take notice of the following:
- brushing or combing hair on a daily basis
- utilizing deodorant each morning
- wax build-up in the ears
- clean and trimmed fingernails
- holes in his socks
- dirty shirts
He doesn’t have to worry about being taunted in the locker room during Phys Ed. On the flip-side, there is no one here to notice these infractions but me. I guess it is time for Hygiene 101 to start next week.
