I love this book because I think poetry can be intimidating. But if we expose our children at an early age to the work of fabulous authors (not simply nursery rhymes, although those are good, too), then when our children mature, they will be more likely to turn to those sometimes intimidating authors.
In addition to the delicious poetry, the book is beautifully illustrated making it fun for the littlest children to read.
And check out this review on NPR (and listen to Roald Dahl read The Dentist and the Crocodile!).
I love a book that both children and adults can enjoy!

Oh poetry really is delicious!! I think we underestimate what are kids can appreciate sometimes. I love to help develop my daughters love of books. She is in love with the bookstore now, and it brings joy to me to see that. I definitely need to pick this one up. It would be wonderful for her to start to learn poetry… at 2!!!!

Great post. I love poetry. My kids and I enjoy reading “Where the sidewalk ends” by Shel Silverstein. It was one that I enjoyed reading when I was younger. Now I enjoy hearing my kids laugh at the poems.
Lena – Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss are my favorites – STILL! I love the wit and humor in their poetry. Classics.
