“Mom, Can I watch TV? Please?” Is this a phrase you hear in your home? I hear it in mine often, even after the designated TV time is over for the day.
As a stay at home Mom I’ve always felt a little guilty letting my kiddos watch television. Not that I think children’s TV is necessarily bad or harmful in small doses especially with channels like PBS Kids & Noggin who thankfully choose not to show commercials among the cartoons. And we more than balance the hour of TV with books and art and healthy play. But even with all the good children’s programming out there much of it is still just brain ‘candy.’
I would like to introduce to you — brain ‘fruit.’ The Readeez Company has come out with a delightful DVD of short 1 minute videos that take the tried and true “see it” and “hear it” concepts of flashcards and apply them to video. Large, clear text appears center stage at the exact moment the character says the word, syllable by syllable. This goes way beyond subtitles and makes text part of the show.
The adorable characters of Isabel and her Dad are a treat to watch. They are a great team and the love and respect apparent in their father-daughter relationship is just the icing on the cake of this really great DVD.
Both my children (4 & 2) and I enjoyed watching the entire 40 minute DVD together. Although you also have the option of watching each one minute segment individually which is nice too. Check out a couple of our favorites below.
My 2 year old son’s favorite:
My 4 year old daughter’s favorite:
My personal favorite:
And finally my Mom’s favorite. She teaches second grade and loved this for both the introduction of the words and the illustration of the concept at the same time.
You can get your very own copy of this wonderful DVD at the Readeez website
But the company has graciously given me one to give away to one of you. If you’d like a chance to win this great DVD, go to the Readeez website, then come back and leave a comment with the word the Readeez company uses to describe their unique method of immersive reading.
The winner will be chosen at random and announced next Friday. Good Luck!

The whole series looks like a very edutaining method to get youngsters interested in reading!
The company calls its method of word presentation for immersive reading “simulsynchrotaneous.”
Simulsynchrotaneous is they word they use. Although, I’m not sure I spelled it right. And is it really a word?? Yikes. Hopefully that one won’t be taught to be two year old quite yet. Thanks for the chance to win.
Simulsynchrotaneous! Dvd’s look fun! Thanks for the chance.
Symulsynchrotaneous. Gee, I hope we don’t have to spell it right! (Apparently, I need to watch more Readeez videos to learn how to spell!)
Another show that has done this well for several years now is Between the Lions on PBS (they also have an accompanying website on pbskids.org – a section for children as well as parents and teachers). the show is aimed at kindegarten through third grade and has been used in several schools. They do a series of skits and stories and illustrate reading in context as well as with text on screen (sounds and words are highlighted at the exact moment they’re spoken as well). And the best news – it’s free to watch and record!
The word is simulsynchrotaneous. We would love to win this!
Simulsynchrotaneous. I watched the videos on your blog with my one-year-old, he loved them! I hope to win but I will definitely be telling other moms about this! Thank you!
yes*yes, simulsynchrotaneous is the word
these videos look AMAZING and whether i win or not, one of these will be in my two year old stocking! thanks for sharing them with us.
I would love a chance to win one. Health food for growing minds sounds great. Simulsynchrotaneous. Entertaining and educational is the only tv that I let my 2 two year olds and 1 one year old watch. As a new stay at home mom tv is an easy way out, but not a good staple. Little bits of educational programs like this are wonderful.
i’m smiling at the health food for my daughter’s brain! simulsynchrotaneous! Hope we win and thank you!
Symulsynchrotaneous. This sounds so cool. My 5 and 3 year old loved the samples on your site.
Awww dang it, I didn’t find the right word but can you tell me where to find it on the site? I thought I looked at all the pages and I am definitely ordering some of the DVDs for the boys for Christmas – They are both enthralled with just the clips on the site – Thanks for the recommendation!
Wow. And also WOW. Such a nice response, and a very insightful review, Katie! We (the Readeez people) truly appreciate it, as well as the many reader comments.
Since we’re not sponsored by anyone (which is by design) The Readeez Company relies on parents to spread the word about our better-for-kids videos. I’m a Dad, and I completely understand the frustration of having a child ask to watch TV. I like to think that Readeez are a “healthier” alternative. So tell your friends….
And thanks again, Katie.
simulsynchotaneous and edutaining! thank you!

This looks like an interesting approach. I have two little ones 2 and under. I’d love to see how this simulsynchrotaneous learning works for them.
Thanks for the giveaway!

simulsynchrotaneous. Whew, sounds supercalafragilistic… well you know.
Simulsynchrotaneous? What a mouthful! I’d love to try this for my 2 year old!
