Reason For Reading

Reading aloud to your child is perhaps one of the most important experiences you can share with him.

The love of books can take him on adventures through time and the world over and span through every subject imaginable. In addition, reading can improve language skills and sharpen listening comprehension.
Here are some tips to instill the joy of reading into your child’s life:
- Start them young. Babies love the sound of your voice and will develop a sense of security and comfort from daily read alouds.
- Give toddlers chewables. Chunky board books are great for rough handling, exploring, and, well, chewing.
- Read books you enjoy. If you’re falling alseep or droning on while reading, you can’t expect a very captivated audience.
- Read the illustrations. Picture books are great but you don’t necessarily have to stick to just the words. Take the time to comment on and point out the beautiful illustrations.
- Read chapter books. Spice up storytime with an exciting chapter book. For the younger child, you can do a quick recap before each session to refresh their memories.
- Surround them with books. Inexpensive books abound in thrift shops and garage sales. Or visit your local library weekly for a fresh supply.
- Read everyday. Make it a ritual to spend some time every day for a good story. A natural would be the bedtime story.
- Read yourself. Children are more likely to pick up the habit if they see their parents reading.
- Continue well into the teen years if your child is willing. Reading aloud shouldn’t stop when a child can read by himself. The time spent hearing a great story, especially one read by a loving parent or caretaker, is a gift that will last a lifetime.

I love reading to my kids, we all enjoy it so much. I have recently gotten in the habit of getting them to the library again (the new baby disrupted that for a while), and we all really love it.
Thanks for the great tips. Instilling the reading habit in our kids is so important!
This is a great post. Those points were carried out by my parents and now I’m doing them with my children. The joy of reading helps so many things go easier.
