With our wallets feeling the pinch of the faltering economy, spending a big wad of cash for Valentine’s Day might not be this year’s best move. Instead, celebrate things you love about one another. Keep your money in the bank.
1. Create a tradition. Our friends Brent and Sonia write each other a poem every year for Valentine’s Day. If you’re not a poetry fan, write a letter or short story. Choose what works for you, and stick with it, to reap both short-term and long-term rewards. Imagine how you’ll feel each year when you read one another’s words of love. Now jump forward ten years. Imagine perusing the scrapbook of love letters you’ve accumulated over time. Priceless.

2. Eat a late lunch. No, no, this isn’t the romantic part. It’s so you can eat dinner late, really late! Spend a little extra at the grocery store & prepare to make a fantastic dinner that’s not your usual fare. Tuck the kids into bed and cook dinner together; perhaps enjoy a glass of wine while you do. Play music, light candles, talk about life. Limit your discussions: no money-matters or other hot topics. You know what they are!

3. Get your blood pumping. No, not that way. But exercise is good for the soul and the libido, especially when you keep it fun. If it’s snowy, go sledding, with or without kids. Live down south? Grab a jacket and walk along the beach or a country road. Take a hike, go for a swim, or grab your ice skates. It doesn’t matter what you do: the idea is to have a few laughs and engage your bodies in the fun.

Be creative. We don’t really need roses or caviar; we just need to say I love you.

Poems to each other. I think we already do that. It goes like this, “eggs. butter. bread. hot dogs. lots of hot dogs.” Nothing says I love you like hot dogs, right?

I babysit my cousins a few days a week, and today we were decorating their Valentine’s Day boxes. My fiancee called in the midst of the project and said, “Oh…you know, I miss making those.”
So guess what Mr. Fiancee and I will be doing this weekend?
Yep. Playing checkers.
No, just kidding; I plan on getting out some shoe boxes, glue, craft paper–things that are already lying around my parents’ house–to decorate boxes and fill them with sweet nothings. And maybe some chocolate…

Cute idea to have a yearly poem! How fun would it be to look back on each year! Thanks for the ideas!
