Christmas is my favorite time of year! So much so that I always dreamed of a Christmas wedding. When my Hubby and I were married at Christmas six years ago, it was also our first Christmas together, since we had met just after the previous New Year.
Merging Christmas Traditions Into Our Own
As we were preparing for our wedding and our first Christmas together, I was very intentional about asking Hubby and his family about their Christmas traditions. I did this for two reasons. First, to get to know my Hubby and his family better. And second, to have a starting point for our own family traditions.
We had a lot of similar traditions, but also some differences. For instance, Hubby’s family always had lasagna for dinner on Christmas Eve. My family always had something light and simple, usually salmon cakes and boiled potatoes. A fun similarity is that we were allowed to open one gift on Christmas Eve and it was usually new pajamas!
As we have moved forward in our lives with a family of our own, we are very intentional about creating new family traditions. We use some traditions from my childhood, some from Hubby’s, and we are also creating new traditions for our daughter to remember and cherish as she grows.
Have you taken the time to learn about your husband’s favorite Christmas traditions? How have you used them to create traditions for your own family? Have there been any difficult times in blending family traditions?

I didn’t know so many other people opened a pajama present on Christmas Eve. I thought we were the only ones!
I’m with Rachel! We have that same tradition and just over the last week or so, I’ve learned of so many others that do the same thing! So much for originality
