Yesterday I wrote about the all too common phenomenon of mothering our husbands. At the League many Extraordinary Wives pointed out the fine line between mothering and caring for our husbands. One fabulous wives made a wonderful point that I would love to share.
She wrote that she ‘babys’ her husband by rubbing his neck, bringing him a favorite snack and generally being wonderful by doing nice things. The timeless words of Jesus come to mind, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” These types loving actions are some that all spouses would love.
On the other hand, ‘mothering’ our husbands is all about jumping in unnecessarily and offering our advice. This is often a loving gesture on our part, but is often interpreted by men to be a reflection on them. It is often very important to a man’s self-concept that he is seen as capable and trustworthy. When wives jump in and very innocently offer advice, it is often taken as an insult to his ego.
I have often been forgetful of the vast differences in the male and female psyche. Learning the common ways men perceive gestures that are meant to be harmless and loving is of vital importance in marriage.
We will explore many more differences of interpreting behavior in the coming weeks.
