The weather is cooling off here which means good news for my electricity bill as we are no longer using our A/C unit any longer. It also means bad news for our natural gas bill as we will be turning on the furnace – but it doesn’t have to.
There are lots of ways to weather proof your home and even if you have replaced worn out weather stripping on doors and windows, replaced old single paned windows with energy efficient ones and made sure your furnace is working in top shape, there is still an easy way to save on your energy bill. Simply adjust your thermostat just ONE DEGREE (down in the colder months, up in the warmer months).
For each degree you adjust the temperature, you can save at least 5%. If your bill averages $100 a month like mine, that adds up to a savings of $60 a year. Adjust the thermostat two degrees and your savings double to $120 a year. Throw on a sweater, extra blanket, and/or socks when you go to bed and you could adjust the thermostat and save even more!
